  1. The four batteries in a lantern battery are what used to be called F cells. What is called an F cell today is not the same thing. I have several old electric railroad lanterns that actually used two of the old-style F cells. An F cell is the same diameter as a D cell, but about 1/3rd longer. I actually took some F cells out of one lantern battery to use in one of those railroad lanterns, and it worked. But two months later, the F cells had leaked (possibly shorting out) and ruined the lantern, which upset me because it was an antique about 60 years old.
