Why are there halos around the moon

Halos (or rings) around the moon are formed as moonlight (reflected sunlight) is refracted from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of these ice crystals result in the focusing of light into a ring. The ice crystals have typically the same shape and create a halo which is almost always the same size.
